TUESDAY I 3 FEBRUARY 2026 –The Faculty of Language Studies and Human Development (FBI), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), with deep sorrow mourns the passing of Dr. Farok bin Zakaria (former Professor), the founding Director of the Centre for Language Studies and Human Development (PBI).

Dr. Farok, affectionately known as “Prof” by many, was the first Director of the Centre for Language Studies and Human Development, serving from the establishment of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan in 2006 until 2016. Throughout his tenure, he played a vital role in laying the academic, administrative, and strategic foundations of the Centre. His visionary leadership and strong commitment to language education and human development shaped the early direction and identity of PBI. In addition, he made significant contributions to the preservation and empowerment of cultural heritage, particularly in the state of Kelantan.

The solid foundation established under his leadership enabled PBI to grow, expand its academic scope, and eventually be elevated to the Faculty of Language Studies and Human Development. The progress achieved by subsequent Directors and Deans stands as clear evidence of the strong groundwork he laid during the formative years of UMK.

After his service at PBI, Dr. Farok continued to contribute to the university at the institutional level as the Director of the UMK International Office, where he played an important role in strengthening the university’s international networks and global collaborations. Even after retiring from UMK, his dedication to education remained unwavering. He later served at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani, as the Head of the Language Centre, continuing his lifelong commitment to language studies, cultural understanding, and academic development.

Dr. Farok passed away in February 2026 at KPJ Hospital, Kota Bharu. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Kampung Pangkal Meleret, Machang, Kelantan. His funeral was attended by members of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, including administrators and academicians, as well as family members and relatives, reflecting the deep respect and affection held for him by the UMK community.

The Faculty of Language Studies and Human Development records its highest appreciation for the invaluable contributions, enduring leadership, and lasting legacy left by the late Dr. Farok bin Zakaria. His vision continues to guide the Faculty’s journey, and his services and contributions will always be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
